data-start=\"191\" data-end=\"457\">On February 24 and 25, 2026, Rosie Benning, Director of Teaching and Training at Collège Nordique, took part in the National Settlement Coordination Meeting: Language Literacy, organized by Achēv and funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp data-start=\"459\" data-end=\"775\">Held under the theme \u003Cem data-start=\"480\" data-end=\"543\">“Stronger Together: Building the Future of Language Literacy”\u003C/em>, the national meeting brought together organizations and institutions from across the country delivering LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) and CLIC (Cours de langue pour les immigrants au Canada) programs.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp data-start=\"777\" data-end=\"1209\">This participation comes at a particularly relevant time, as Collège Nordique is currently working in partnership with the NWT Literacy Council to establish a bilingual community literacy centre in Yellowknife. In parallel, Collège Nordique is also collaborating with the Réseau pour le développement de l’alphabétisme et des compétences (RESDAC) on the organization of a pan-territorial summit on lifelong learning.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp data-start=\"1211\" data-end=\"1437\">The exchanges and resources presented during this national meeting are helping the Collège Nordique team better understand approaches developed across the country and further inform the development of new literacy initiatives.\u003C/p>\n\u003Ch2 data-section-id=\"5si0c2\" data-start=\"1439\" data-end=\"1478\">Shared challenges across the country\u003C/h2>\n\u003Cp data-start=\"1480\" data-end=\"1806\">The meeting provided an opportunity for participants to discuss realities experienced on the ground in different regional contexts. Despite the diversity of environments, several common challenges emerged, particularly when supporting newcomers who must learn a new language while also developing foundational literacy skills.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cblockquote>\n\u003Cp data-start=\"1808\" data-end=\"2187\">“This meeting gave me the opportunity to connect with professionals from other institutions and better understand the approaches being developed across the country. It was especially interesting to see that, despite the diversity of contexts, many organizations are facing very similar challenges when it comes to supporting learners with literacy needs,” explains Rosie Benning.\u003C/p>\n\u003C/blockquote>\n\u003Cp data-start=\"2189\" data-end=\"2489\">Discussions also focused on the use of the PBLA (Portfolio-Based Language Assessment) framework, used in both LINC and CLIC programs. Several organizations shared reflections on how certain practices could be adapted to better align with the realities of learners with significant literacy needs.\u003C/p>\n\u003Ch2 data-section-id=\"1hq0cck\" data-start=\"2491\" data-end=\"2524\">Resources to support educators\u003C/h2>\n\u003Cp data-start=\"2526\" data-end=\"2634\">The meeting also highlighted a wide range of andragogical resources designed for language literacy programs.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp data-start=\"2636\" data-end=\"2875\">Rosie explored in particular the resources developed by the Literacy Centre of Expertise at The Immigrant Education Society (TIES), which offer various tools to support educators and organizations delivering language training programs.\u003C/p>\n\u003Cp data-start=\"2877\" data-end=\"2901\">These resources include:\u003C/p>\n\u003Cul>\n\u003Cli data-start=\"2905\" data-end=\"3005\">pedagogical approaches to support reading and writing development, including phonics-based methods\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli data-start=\"3008\" data-end=\"3075\">interactive tools to practice everyday tasks, such as using email\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli data-start=\"3078\" data-end=\"3143\">monthly sessions bringing educators together to share practices\u003C/li>\n\u003Cli data-start=\"3146\" data-end=\"3212\">professional development opportunities and pedagogical resources\u003C/li>\n\u003C/ul>\n\u003Cblockquote>\n\u003Cp data-start=\"3214\" data-end=\"3415\">“I discovered several very practical resources that can support educators in their work. Some tools, for example, allow learners to practice everyday tasks in a safe and adapted environment,” she adds.\u003C/p>\n\u003C/blockquote>\n\u003Cp data-start=\"3417\" data-end=\"3606\">These resources complement other national tools presented during the event, including platforms such as Tutela and CanAvenue, which support language training programs for newcomers.\u003C/p>\n\u003Ch2 data-section-id=\"1fptdo8\" data-start=\"3608\" data-end=\"3635\">Learning beyond language\u003C/h2>\n\u003Cp data-start=\"3637\" data-end=\"3919\">Discussions also highlighted the strong connections between language learning, literacy, and digital skills.
