Courses are interactive and practical, tailored to your real needs—whether for daily life, employment, citizenship, or integration in Canada. You progress at your own pace, with personalized guidance and regular follow-up throughout your learning journey. Enrollment is possible at any time during the year, depending on availability. At the end of each completed level, you will receive a badge or an official certificate that recognizes your language achievements.

Target audience

This free program is intended for newcomers to Canada living in the Northwest Territories or Nunavut, whether they are permanent residents, refugees, or belong to any other category designated by IRCC. It is designed for adults aged 18 and over who wish to learn French as part of their social and professional integration journey.

Program description

The CLIC program begins with an initial language assessment based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). This step ensures you are placed at the level that best matches your current French skills.

Courses are interactive and tailored to your real needs—whether for daily life, employment, citizenship, or integration in Canada.

You progress at your own pace, with personalized and regular follow-up throughout your learning journey. You can start at any time, except during the summer break (July–August).

At the end of each completed level, you will receive a badge or certificate of achievement that recognizes your language skills.

Program structure

This course includes two levels: CLB 1–2 and CLB 3–4.

Each level consists of two classes of 2 to 3 hours each, dedicated to the corresponding level, as well as a cultural café open to all levels. The total weekly hours are: 5 hours of classroom instruction and 2 hours of cultural café.

The duration of the program for each level is therefore 7 hours per week. Courses begin in early September and end in June or July.

To move from one level to the next, participants must achieve the competencies of that level, attend at least 80% of classes, and complete assessment tasks in all four skills (speaking, writing, listening, and reading).

Learning objectives

Listening comprehension (LC): Understand simple words, expressions, and sentences related to immediate or common needs, in familiar contexts.
Speaking (SP): Communicate in a basic way using simple words, expressions, and sentences to exchange personal information or talk about daily life.
Reading comprehension (RC): Recognize and understand simple words, expressions, and texts related to familiar topics and daily life needs.
Writing (WR): Write personal information, words, expressions, or simple sentences about oneself and everyday situations.

Included cultural and community activities

Practical workshops to promote cultural and community integration, such as:

Visits to community spaces and events
Introduction to Indigenous culture (Dene storytelling, fish preparation, etc.)

Hands-on activities (making mittens, jewelry, keychains) to learn while having fun.

Assessment and training levels

A language assessment based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) is offered to determine your French level before enrolling in the *French training program (CLIC levels 1 to 4)**, either on campus or online.
