English Classes for Newcomers (LINC program)

This course is divided into 8 levels. Each level includes two classes of 2 to 3 hours each, dedicated to the corresponding level.

The duration of the program for each level is 44 weeks, with 6 hours of instruction per week. Courses start in early September and end in June or July.

To move from one level to the next, participants must achieve the competencies of the level, attend at least 80% of classes, and complete assessment tasks in the four skills (speaking, writing, listening, and reading).

• Listening comprehension (LC): Understand simple words, expressions, and sentences related to immediate or common needs in familiar contexts.
• Speaking (SP): Communicate in a basic way using simple words, expressions, and sentences to exchange personal information or talk about daily life.
• Reading comprehension (RC): Recognize and understand simple words, expressions, and texts related to familiar topics and daily life needs.
• Writing (WR): Write personal information, words, expressions, or simple sentences about oneself and everyday situations.

Practical workshops to promote cultural and community integration, such as:

• Visits to community spaces and events
• Introduction to Indigenous culture (Dene storytelling, fish preparation, etc.)
• Community activities (making mittens, jewelry, keychains) to learn while having fun

An assessment based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) is offered to determine your English level before enrolling in the English training (LINC levels 0 to 7) at our premises or in your workplace.

1. Prerequisites
   Pass the CLBPT assessment test, reside in the NWT or Nunavut, and be 18 years of age or older.
   
   

2. Status
   Be a newcomer to Canada with permanent resident or refugee status, or belong to any other category designated by IRCC.

3. Other requirements
   Demonstrate progress in language acquisition.
   Maintain an attendance rate of at least 80% in classes (see policy).
