CNF welcomes Senator Clément: a moment of discussion and sharing

  • Events

On March 13, 2024, Collège Nordique was honoured to welcome Senator Bernadette Clément, an icon of community and political engagement in Canada. A lawyer and the former mayor of Cornwall, she is a passionate defender of linguistic and cultural diversity. Senator Clément was the first black woman mayor in Ontario. Prior to that, she served three terms as a municipal councillor.

A meeting under the banner of excellence

Upon her arrival, warmly welcomed by Patrick Arsenault, Executive Director of the CNF, and Angélique Ruzindana, President of the CNF, Senator Clément plunged into the heart of our educational ecosystem. The visit brilliantly opened the dialogue on our educational programs and our deep commitment to Indigenous communities and newcomers, demonstrating shared values and ambitions. The Senator also had the opportunity to visit the Collège's premises and meet members of the team in a relaxed environment.

She took part in an English class for newcomers and shared her own family's story, including the journey of how her father, now 102 years old, came to Canada from Trinidad and Tobago. She was as curious as she was generous as she listened to the students' stories, and shared several pieces of advice with them.

Dialogue and community collaboration at the heart of our mission

The Executive Director, Patrick Arsenault, highlighted the essence of CNF's collaboration with Indigenous communities, exemplified by the success of the Tłı̨chǫ workbook, a symbol of our participatory approach.

"Our collaboration with Indigenous communities aims to create programs that are truly beneficial", says Patrick, emphasizing the depth of our commitment.

Angélique Ruzindana expanded on this vision:

"By developing our programs hand-in-hand with Indigenous communities, we offer them the reins of their education. It's a question of mutual trust, support, and ultimately, empowerment."

A deep and lasting impact

Senator Clément's presence at the CNF is far from insignificant. She embodies an unwavering support for education, the French-speaking world and intercultural dialogue. Her discussions reaffirmed a shared desire to see institutions like ours thrive and enrich the Canadian socio-cultural landscape.

In short, Senator Clément's visit to the CNF marks not only a moment of recognition, but also a renewed impetus towards fulfilling our educational mission. It strengthens our determination to move forward with passion, so that the CNF continues to shine in the French-speaking educational community.
