First Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day Celebrates Educators Across the NWT

October 27, 2026, marks the first-ever Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day in the Northwest Territories. It is an opportunity to recognize the essential work of those who support young children and their families every day across the territory.

This day highlights a sector that is essential not only to children’s development, but also to the vitality of our communities. Early childhood educators help create safe and stimulating environments where children can learn, develop independence, build their identity and thrive.

Journeys that highlight the importance of the profession in the North

Over the past several months, Collège Nordique has shared the voices of people working in early childhood education through its Voices of Early Childhood in the North series.

Their journeys are different, but several common experiences emerge. Christelle Nkounhawa-Fotso highlights the importance of community and the Northern context in supporting children. Elsa chose to redirect her career toward early childhood education and is now continuing her professional development in the field. Fatoumata Yacine Diallo also entered the sector through a different career path and now hopes to continue her training, with the ambition of helping address the shortage of childcare spaces. Laure, who brings several years of experience as an educator in Cameroon, continues to adapt her practice to the realities of the North and reminds us that, in this profession, “we never stop learning.”

These experiences illustrate both the diversity of educators’ journeys and the importance of providing training opportunities that allow them to continue developing their skills throughout their careers.

Training and supporting those who work with children

Collège Nordique contributes to this effort by developing French-language training opportunities adapted to the realities of people who are already working in the sector.

Online courses cover topics including early childhood culture in Northern Canada, professionalism, health and safety, collaboration, children’s well-being and development, as well as the management and administration of childcare services.

These opportunities are complemented by mentorship sessions, where participants can discuss situations they encounter in the field, ask questions and reflect on their practices. For people like Fatoumata and Laure, this support provides a practical way to continue learning while remaining professionally active. Fatoumata has highlighted how accessible training allows her to “continue my training without having to stop working.” Laure, meanwhile, explains that mentorship helps her better understand how education works in the North.

Different measures can also help make training more accessible. In winter 2026, a scholarship from the Association des collèges et universités de la francophonie canadienne (ACUFC) was among the opportunities available to support eligible individuals in their training journey.

Continuing to recognize early childhood education in the North

Recognizing early childhood educators also means recognizing the expertise, training and professional development required to provide quality services to children and families.

Collège Nordique would therefore like to take this first Early Childhood Educator Appreciation Day as an opportunity to thank all early childhood educators working in our Northern and Francophone communities.
