The capital of Nunavut, Iqaluit, hosted an event of vital importance for Canada's Northern territories, on February 13 and 14, 2024: the NIIP Northern Summit. The event, funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), brought together stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds to discuss the challenges and opportunities related to immigration in the Far North.

NIIP : a pillar for northern immigration

NIIP is a unique consortium of organisations, including Collège Nordique, offering services to newcomers in the three Northern territories. Their goal is to work collaboratively to build capacity, address gaps and analyse trends in settlement and integration. The Iqaluit summit was an opportunity for stakeholders to share best practices and strengthen their collective voice with national authorities.

Collège Nordique at the heart of the event

Collège Nordique, through Marie-France Lanteigne, Director of Training and Student Success, and Dominique Poirier, Coordinator of Student Services and Community Engagement, played a key role in organising the summit. In addition to their involvement in the organising committee, they took the opportunity to meet key partners such as AFN (Association des francophones du Nunavut) and Carrefour Nunavut, paving the way for future rewarding partnerships.

The discussions and exchanges held during the summit paved the way for potential partnerships, crucial to strengthening settlement services in the NWT. These enriching interactions underline the importance of networking and collaboration between the various players involved in immigration to the Far North.

Collège Nordique's participation in the NIIP Northern Summit is a perfect illustration of its role and active involvement in the field of immigration in Canada, particularly in the Northern territories. By highlighting difficulties and similarities, while sharing strategies for adaptation and support, the Collège is actively contributing to improving the conditions for welcoming and integrating immigrants in the NWT.

One step closer to successful integration in the Far North

The Iqaluit Northern Summit marks an important step in strengthening cooperation and knowledge sharing between the various stakeholders involved in immigration in Canada's Far North. The efforts of Collège Nordique and other NIIP members demonstrate a deep commitment to welcoming and integrating newcomers, essential to the vitality and energy of these unique communities. This event highlights the importance of continuing to work together to build an inclusive and prosperous future in the Far North.
