Stepping outside the classroom also means opening new spaces for learning.

This week, learners from the LINC and CLIC programs at Collège Nordique took part in an immersive experience rooted in history and place, accompanied by Tamlin Gilbert and David Stephens, English instructors in the LINC program.

The morning began at Collège Nordique with a presentation on the history of Yellowknife delivered by local historian Ryan Silke. Through a dynamic presentation supported by visual materials, this session helped establish key reference points, deepen understanding of the territory’s evolution, and spark meaningful discussions where participants shared observations and asked questions.

The activity then continued at the Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Centre, where the group took part in a behind-the-scenes tour. This experience provided rare access to artifacts not usually on display, offering a deeper understanding of the region’s cultural and historical heritage beyond what is typically visible.

Learning a language, understanding a place

Beyond the knowledge gained, this experience helped situate language learning in a real and living context. By exploring local history, learners expanded their vocabulary, developed greater confidence in speaking, and strengthened their ability to engage in real-life situations.

These moments of learning also broaden perspectives. Without drawing simplistic parallels, they create space for reflection on individual journeys and the many realities that shape a territory. For many learners with immigrant backgrounds, engaging with local history can support a deeper understanding of their environment and contribute to their sense of belonging.

Learning a language also means learning to listen, observe, and understand the stories that shape a place.

Through this activity, Collège Nordique reaffirms the importance of an experience-based pedagogical approach that supports learning, connection, and integration.
