Collège Nordique and Cégep Gérald-Godin have launched a research collaboration aimed at better understanding the linguistic and cultural integration of students in multilingual contexts.

This comparative project brings into dialogue two complementary realities: that of Montreal’s West Island, a multicultural environment, and that of Yellowknife, located in the heart of an officially multilingual territory where eleven recognized official languages coexist. By examining these contexts together, the teams seek to enhance welcoming practices and support pedagogical innovation within member institutions of the Réseau des cégeps et des collèges francophones du Canada.

A research presence in Yellowknife

As part of the project, Christian Bergeron, Principal Researcher at the Centre for Research and Innovation in Educational Francophonie at Cégep Gérald-Godin, conducted a research visit at Collège Nordique during the week of February 16, 2026.

This visit included a focus group as well as several individual interviews with members of the College team who work daily with students. Discussions addressed integration pathways, linguistic security, challenges specific to minority-language settings, and concrete strategies that support student success.

In a Northern context, welcoming practices extend beyond linguistic integration. They are shaped by cultural diversity, mobility, geographic remoteness, and the richness of Indigenous languages present across the territory. This research therefore contributes to documenting practices adapted to a multilingual environment that is unique in Canada.

A collaboration continuing in Montreal

The next phase of the project will bring Mounir Barry, Director of Student Experience and Quality Assurance at Collège Nordique, to Cégep Gérald-Godin in Montreal in March. This visit will further institutional exchanges, support comparative analysis of practices, and strengthen the partnership between the two institutions.

According to Mounir Barry, “Bringing Northern and Southern realities into dialogue allows us to deepen our understanding of integration challenges and to identify exemplary practices that support student integration in minority and multilingual contexts.”

A project aligned with Collège Nordique’s mission

This initiative aligns fully with Collège Nordique’s commitment to:

  • affirming the role of training in welcoming and integrating newcomers;
  • contributing to the vitality of Francophone communities in minority settings;
  • valuing the linguistic and cultural realities specific to the North.

By bridging the experiences of Montreal and Yellowknife, the project will help expand knowledge on integration in Francophone multilingual environments and support postsecondary institutions seeking to adapt their practices to contemporary realities.

Supported by the Réseau des cégeps et des collèges francophones du Canada, this partnership illustrates the capacity of both institutions to build meaningful national collaborations that contribute to the future of Canadian Francophonie.
