Intensive synchronous courses are scheduled over two full weekends, every other weekend, with classes held on Saturdays and Sundays. Between weekends, students should plan about one hour per day for readings, assignments, and research.
Asynchronous online courses are available anytime and follow a more flexible schedule. However, they extend over several weeks, requiring students to follow deadlines to complete their readings and assignments on time.

View financial aid(Opens in a new tab)As of November 14, 2024, the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) updated the regulations for Early Learning and Child Care (ELCC) services. The update introduced a standardized wage grid and a certification process for staff working in licensed childcare centres.
The wage grid sets a minimum hourly rate based on the geographic zone, the role, the individual’s experience, level of education, knowledge of Indigenous realities, and prior experience in the North.
Zone A (Yellowknife): The starting wage for an early childhood educator at Step 1 is $35.50/hour (ELCC Educator Step 1).
Please refer to the full wage grid for more information on salaries by zone, step, and certification level.
Early childhood educators can work in a variety of settings, including:
Yes, part-time enrollment is possible. However, by default, applications are processed for full-time studies. Once admitted, the student must submit a course withdrawal request to reduce their course load. That said, the program is designed to allow students to maintain a full-time schedule while managing family responsibilities.
Courses are held on Saturdays and Sundays, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., one course at a time. Once the two weekends for one course are completed, the next course begins the following weekend.
You should expect to spend about 10 to 15 hours per week on readings, assignments, and online coursework. This includes work related to synchronous weekend classes, but not the actual time spent in class.
Although the schedule is flexible, this is a college-level program that requires serious commitment. It’s designed to adapt to your reality — and part-time options remain available for those who need them.
No, an open work permit does not allow you to officially enroll in a program that leads to a certificate or diploma. However, you can still take up to four courses without being formally admitted to the program.
After submitting the application, the College usually requests proof of status within 2 business days. That same email includes a link to take the admission tests, which provide immediate results.
If you send your documents promptly and pass the tests as soon as they’re received, the entire admission process can take around 4 to 5 business days.
Note: Even if you hold a WES equivalency, the admission tests are still required.
Yes, absolutely. The daycare simply needs to complete a sponsorship form for each staff member they wish to sponsor. This allows for separate invoices to be issued for each registered student.
The employer must submit an official sponsorship letter that includes the following:

The opening of La Garderie du Renard Roux represents much more than a professional project — it's a dream come true. My goal is to offer a warm and educational environment where children in the Yukon, aged 0 to 5, can grow and thrive starting in early 2026.
