Violence and Systems of Power

About the course

This course consists of three modules of approximately 15 hours each, focusing on a common competency: understanding and preventing racism, bullying and sexual violence.

Although these three issues are distinct, they aim to shed light on how systems of power operate and how they contribute to discrimination, exclusion and the loss of agency among people belonging to historically marginalized groups.

These topics are approached from an intersectional perspective. Intersectionality shows how a person’s experience of systemic inequalities is shaped by overlapping social factors such as gender, ethnicity, ability, sexual orientation and social class. Systems of power and oppression therefore challenge fundamental human and societal values such as diversity, inclusion and equity.

By developing your knowledge, you will be able to:

• understand and identify systems of power and oppression in these three forms;
• develop skills to challenge them in a sustainable way;
• take responsibility for your own learning through a critical approach;
• become an active and informed person when addressing the various issues covered in the course.
